Description
Collecting springtails to feed your animals is so much easier with clay cultures than charcoal cultures; just flip it over and tap.
The clay comes in powder form. 1 pound of clay will make about 5 cultures in 8 oz deli cups. We recommend using at least 3 oz of the clay powder to make one 8 oz culture for longer lasting, more productive cultures.
Each order comes with detailed instructions on how to make springtail cultures.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SPRINGTAIL CULTURES:
Just put some clay powder in a container, then add water at (approximately) a 1:2 (water:clay) ratio by weight. In practice, we find that just a splash more water can be helpful to get a good consistency. Mix the clay and water evenly, or let it sit for a day until the clay absorbs all the water. At this point the springtails can be added as is or, if you prefer, spread the now wet clay to cover the inside of the container for a greater surface area for springtails to thrive. After adding the springtails, you’ll want to go ahead and lightly feed them. We prefer to use active dry yeast and/or brewer’s yeast. Put an air-tight lid on. Check on them and feed them once a week or so. When feeding, mist lightly if the clay seems dry. It is important to not over feed them. Do not get the clay too dry or too wet. Typically cultures reach their full production within 5-6 weeks, depending on how many springtails you seed the cultures with.
For example, if you use 3 oz of clay powder, add about 1.5 oz of water. (Again, in practice we’ll add closer to 1.7 or 1.8 oz of water.)
*We recommend you wear a mask and work outside when working with dry clay powder. It contains very fine particulate matter, including silica.
