In Frog and Frond Bryophyte Starter Cups we offer our favorite vivarium suitable bryophytes (mosses and liverworts) that have done well in our vivaria over the last several years.
Each cup contains small portions of at least 8 species of live mosses and liverworts. They are not wild collected so safe to be used in your vivarium with dart frogs.
Having a good growth of mosses and liverworts in your vivarium takes time and patience, whether you start with a dry mix, a slurry, or live plants – but it’s so rewarding (and interesting) to see these tiny plants slowly spread over your driftwood and background over time, while other vivarium plants also fill in. Using multiple types of bryophytes is key to diverse aesthetics of your bioactive enclosures.
The cups are about 2.5″ square. The bryophytes are started in the cups at least a week prior to shipping.

All of the bryophytes (mosses and liverworts) we offer have no ID. Some of them came in a dry moss mix we got from a dart frog breeder years ago, and others are probably ‘hitchhikers’ on some plants we obtained over the years. We have never acquired any bryophyte species specifically, and all of them just came up in our vivaria or plant propagation tubs at some point.
We prefer to avoid labeling our bryophytes without knowing where they came from, because it’s nearly impossible to accurately identify them without proper tools and knowledge, and we don’t want to mislabel them.
They may be tropical or temperate. The species we use in our Bryophyte Starter Cups have done well in vivarium conditions throughout the year without going dormant.
